Tips For Packing Your Boxes During a Move

Boxes come in handy during moving time. They protect your items nicely and you are able to bunch your items together to save time during your move. Not every item is meant to be put in boxes, but of those that are here are some tips to help you during your move.

Begin with your lighter items. Lighter items are easier to pack, and they can be put in larger boxes. Remember if you are using softer items, such as towels, as padding you will need to pack them later.

Heavier items are next. Start with items that are not fragile, such as books. They may take up a lot of room, but you do not have to worry about adding bubble wrap or other things to keep them safe.

When packing heavier items remember to use smaller boxes. Even if you can fit them all in one large box, it is best for your safety and the safety of your items to pack them in a few smaller boxes instead. The weight can hurt your back, be difficult to carry, and might even be too much for the box causing it to break open and spilling out the contents.

Try not to let any of the boxes weigh over 40 pounds. Cardboard boxes are handy to use during moves, but they do not have superhuman strength. 40 pounds allows the box to be moved by a strong mover or a couple movers with out risking their health or the box’s strength.

Movers should try to move boxes carefully. If the boxes cannot be lifted, either remove the contents in to smaller boxes or ask the movers to use a dolly. Professional movers have this type of equipment on hand to move all boxes safely.

Precious items should be packed last. This will give them last chance to break, and remind you to handle them with more care. You can even specify certain boxes that you would like to take with you in your car, such as family photo albums or important documents.

Do not forget to label your moving boxes. Keep your items organized before the move so you do not have chaos in your new home. It may be a good idea to label the boxes according to the rooms they are normally placed so you can put the boxes there and unpack them one at a time.
